Nick’s Cove Cottages: Reimagining an iconic Northern California hideaway

IDF Studio was honored to take on the revitalization of Nick’s Cove Cottages in Tomales Bay, a beloved destination for both locals and tourists since the 1930s. And we’re so proud that our redesign of the property’s 12 original cottages landed the resort at the number one spot on Travel & Leisure’s “2023 It List” for Best New Resorts in the US. We preserved its architectural integrity and honored the quirks of each individual cottage with period-specific lighting and original antique furnishings from the settlement. A refreshed coastal color palette, character-rich wall coverings, and highly durable materials ensure the updated cottages will stand up to a new generation of visitors.

Nick’s Cove Cottages is a West Marin institution boasting twelve cabins nestled along Tomales Bay. Well-loved for their rustic nautical charm and picturesque setting, each cottage has its own look and feel – that unique history and sense of place informed the redesign. Newly-painted paneling, refinished floors, updated lighting, and quirky wallcoverings give the century-old settlement a fresh identity without sacrificing its architectural legacy. Salt-and-sand-proof upholstery and floor coverings will stand up to visitors, and updated accessories, like plush blankets and pillows, add a sense of comfort typically reserved for residential projects. We’re proud to say that the cottages feel fresh and nostalgic at once.
